  • In the runs: No one has scored more in international cricket.

On this day seven years ago, Sachin Tendulkar became the first man to make 30,000 international runs with a match-saving innings on the final day of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka in Ahmedabad.

It was the 44th over of the day and Tendulkar clipped an inswinging delivery from Chanaka Welegedara to deep square leg for a single.

His 35th run in the innings meant that the 12,777 Test runs, 17,178 ODI runs and ten from the lone T20 previously, added up to the record. He also brought up his 88th international hundred and 43rd in Tests.

Here are other memorable sporting events that happened on this day:

1997: A.C. Green of the Dallas Mavericks set an NBA record by playing in his 907th consecutive game in a matchup against Golden State.

2012: David Beckham announces he would end his six-year stay at the Los Angeles Galaxy.

2014: Sebastian Vettel signs a three-year deal with Ferrari with the team confirming Fernando Alonso’s exit.

2015: Jos Buttler scores England’s fastest ODI century off 46 balls in the 84-run win over Pakistan in fourth ODI in Dubai.
