  • A total prize money of Dh339,000 will be up grabs when the fifth edition of the Dubai International Open Bowling Championship (IOBC) takes place from October 1 to 14, officials have announced.

Organised by the UAE Bowling Association (UBA) and supported by Dubai Sports Council, local and international players will compete in the event at Dubai International Bowling Centre in Al Mamzar.

The competition will have three categories – open (for UAE nationals and residents), women’s and youths (aged 21-years-old and under). Two Emiratis have been crowned champions – Shakir Ali (2011) and Mahmud Ahmed Alataar (2013), and officials will be hoping the success continues.

The UBA chairman Mohamed Al Qubaisi hopes the competition will help the competitors gain experience ahead of the world championships with the men’s and women’s events to be held in December 2014 and November 2015 in Abu Dhabi.

He said: “The championship provides an opportunity for our players to gain more experience and it acquires additional values as it is considered as preparation for the men’s world championship and the women’s world championship in Abu Dhabi in 2015.”

Speaking of the tournament, Dr Ahmed Al Shareef, secretary-general of DSC, said: “We, at DSC, is happy to support the organisation of this championship since its inception in 2010.

"We want to continue our support to realise the objectives of holding such an event in spreading and developing the game, providing our players an opportunity to compete with other international players in order to raise their technical capacities and talents.”
