Pakistan batsman Fawad Alam just can’t catch a break nowadays. He is not considered good enough to be even part of the touring team, despite being one of the most prolific batsmen in Pakistan’s first-class cricket for 10 years, even as limited overs players and batsmen with modest returns getting Test caps.

Fawad’s exclusion has left many, including the player himself, perplexed. And just to add to the bemusement, the 32-year-old batsman managed to get himself timed out this week.

Hi it’s Niall here bringing you the top sports stories on Monday morning.

TOP STORY

Manchester City’s Leroy Sane has been omitted from Germany’s World Cup squad.

The 22-year-old was named the PFA young player of the season after a superb campaign in which his contributions to City winning the Premier League title were significant, but it has not been enough for him to travel to Russia.

He was included in manager Joachim Low’s initial 27-strong provisional squad but it was unexpectedly announced on Monday morning that he had been cut alongside Bernd Leno and Jonathan Tah of Bayer Leverkusen, and Freiburg’s Nils Petersen.

FOOTBALL

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been named in Egypt’s 23-man squad for the World Cup finals in Russia.

Salah had been a doubt for the tournament after injuring his shoulder during last month’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

But after undergoing treatment he has been selected for his country’s Group A campaign where they will face hosts Russia, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.

Elsewhere, Nabil Fekir‘s agent has confirmed Liverpool‘s interest in the Lyon captain and talisman, adding that no agreement has been reached between the two clubs over the Frenchman’s transfer.

Another player looking to retain her crown is ladies champion Laura Massaro. The 34-year-old may not have enjoyed a glittering season by her standards, but five semi-finals in seven tournament is still a formidable return.
