  • Akhtar bowled superbly to the New Zealanders.

A sensational display of fast bowling by Shoaib Akhtar (3-55) formed the highlight of this World Cup semi-final.

Egged on by 20,000 Pakistani fans at Old Trafford, on this day 16 years ago, Akhtar clocked speeds of 90 mph and rattled the Kiwis as they were restricted to 241-7 in 50 overs.

He did not need any assistance from the fielder as all his victims were bowled.

Opener Nathan Astle was done in by a express delivery, Kiwi captain Stephen Fleming was bowled by a vicious yorker hurled at 92mph and Chris Harris was foxed by a slower one.

Openers Saeed Anwar (113 no) and Wajatullah Wasti (84) sealed a ninewicket win for Pakistan but it was an Akhtar show all the way.

1929: The first four places in the Le Mans 24-hour race are occupied by British-made Bentleys with Woolf Barnato and Sir Henry Birkin taking the top spot.

2004: Liverpool appoint Rafael Benitez as their new manager.

2008: Tiger Woods battles a troubled knee to win the US Open in a 19-hole play-off against Rocco Mediate at the Torrey Pines course.

2013: Andy Murray emerges victorious at the AEGON Championship, his third title at Queen’s.
