  • Jeremy Coney, Matt Kuchar, Michel Platini all celebrate their birthdays.

JEREMY CONEY (63): Jeremy was an organised batsman, a steady medium-pacer and a fine fielder, who became an exceptionally astute captain for New Zealand. Coney had appeared in Tests against all the other countries before taking over from Geoff Howarth as skipper in Pakistan in 1984-85. He was an important member of the team that reached the semis of the 1979 World Cup.

Consistent batting, including a record seventh-wicket stand with Howarth, helped New Zealand to a shock series victory over the West Indies in 1979-80, but it was not until the first Test against England in 1983-84 that he finally registered a maiden Test century, an eight-hour match-saving marathon of 174 not out. He led New Zealand to a first series win in England, in 1986. He was awarded an MBE in 1986, and became a successful TV and radio sports commentator and presenter.

MATT KUCHAR (37): The American golfer won The Players Championship in 2012 and the 2013 World Golf Championship.

MICHEL PLATINI (60): One of the greatest footballers of all-time and current president of UEFA.

PIERRE THORSSON (49): Former handball player who won three Olympic silver medals with Sweden from 1992-2000.

RICHARD JEFFERSON (35): American basketball player, plays for the Dallas Mavericks.
