  • Dan Wheldon, Jerome Taylor, Randy Couture celebrate their birthdays.

DAN WHELDON (37): Born on this day in 1978, the former British racing driver was the 2005 Indy Racing League IndyCar Series champion and a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, having won the race in 2005 and 2011.

Tragically, Wheldon died from severe head injuries during the IZOD IndyCar World Championship at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on 16 October 2011 at just 33 years old. Wheldon was involved in a 15-car accident on the 11th lap, in which his car flew approximately 325 feet (99m) into the catchfence cockpit-first and landed back on the racing surface after his head hit a pole lining the track. The carnage and ensuing debris resulted in race officials almost instantly throwing a red flag.

In July 2013, Autosport magazine named Wheldon one of the 50 greatest drivers to have never raced in Formula One.

JEROME TAYLOR (31): Jamaican born West Indian quick bowler, who spearheads the WI bowling attack

GUISEPPE DE LUCA (24): Italian striker who plays for Serie B club Bari on loan from Atalanta

THOMAS VOECKLER (36): French cyclist who rides for Team Europcar. Placed fourth in 2011 Tour de France

RANDY COUTURE (52): The first of only two fighters to hold two UFC championship titles in two divisions
