  • Patrick Vieira, Zinedine Zidane, Francesca Schiavone all celebrate their birthdays.

ZINEDINE ZIDANE (43): Considered by most as one of the greatest footballers to have graced a pitch.

In 2001, the midfielder became the most expensive player in football history when Real Madrid acquired him for 75 million euros (Dh313m).

His tenure with the Spanish giants has done nothing but cement his reputation as one of the all-time greats of European football. He scored an incredible, famous match-winning goal, a volley with his weaker foot, in Madrid’s 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the 2002 Champions League final. The goal has been cited as one of the greatest in Champions League history.

Zidane guided France to 1998 World Cup glory, scoring twice in the final, and Euro 2000 success. Add those to a La Liga title and two Serie A triumphs with Juventus. Zidane is now Real Madrid’s B team boss and has just obtained his UEFA pro license.

PATRICK VIEIRA (39): The former France World Cup winner and three-time Premier League champion with Arsenal.

FRANCESCA SCHIAVONE (35): The first Italian woman to a win Grand Slam singles event at the 2010 French Open.

LOU YUN (51): The retired Chinese gymnast who competed in the 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympic games.

TAKESHI MATSUDA (31): A Japanese Olympic medalist, winning bronze in 2012 in men’s 200m long course butterfly.
