  • At last: Europe triumph.

A momentous day for Team Europe as Tony Jacklin led his team to a first victory over the Americans in nearly three decades.

Scotland’s Sam Torrance was the man to clinch the win on the final day at the Belfry, his 22-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole gave him a 1-up victory against Andy North to give the Europeans an unassailable 14½ to 8½ lead.

Europe had began the third and final day with a narrow two point lead, Manuel Pinero, Paul Way, Sandy Lyle, Bernhard Langer, Howard Clark and Jose Maria Canizares also tasting victory for Jacklin’s men as the US were simply blown away.

Victory was at the time the biggest margin of victory for Europe in the competition.

Other memorable events on this day…

1978: Muhammad Ali outpoints Leon Spinks to become the first boxer to win the world heavyweight title three times.

1984: Lester Piggott breaks Frank Buckle’s record of 27 Classic wins as he rides Commanche Run to victory in the St Leger.
