  • [L-R] Neville Southall, Manuel Pellegrini, Kevin Young.

A former Chilean footballer, Pelligrini has made a name for himself as an astute manager.

The Santiago-born, who turns 62 today, took up coaching firstly in his native Chile and then Argentina. He then moved to Europe in 2004 to take the manager’s post at Villarreal, and he transformed the Yellow Submarine into a fighting outfit.

His consistent performance at Villarreal attracted the attention of Real Madrid and he was appointed their manager in 2009.

Despite amassing a then club record 96 points, he was dismissed for failing to win the title. Pellegrini then moved to Malaga in 2010.

He led Malaga to a fourthplace finish in his first season and to qualification for the Champions League.

In 2013, he was appointed manager of Manchester City and the next year, became the first manager from outside Europe to manage a team to the EPL title.
