  • Awards for individual excellence are up for grabs in the seven-a-side tournament.

Female footballers can expect plenty of fun and competitive matches when the new Dubai Women’s Football Association (DWFA) season gets underway next week.

So far 12 teams signed up for the seven-a-side format, but you can still join them before Thursday’s deadline.

    – ME Touch: Sign up for regional championship

Since launching in 2004, the DWFA has gone from strength to strength, attracting hundreds of budding female footballers for its competitive leagues. And that is no surprise given football is one of the most popular sports played in the UAE.

This season, which will be managed by It’s Just Football academy, looks set to be no different. Whether it is for social, fitness or competitive reasons, the competition is open to players of all abilities with the minimum age being 14 years old.

“We are entering our 12th year with 12 registered teams so far,” said Kat Lukovic of the DWFA committee.

“It has been a remarkable experience watching the league grow from strength to strength and seeing players developing skills to improve their game.”

Players can look forward to some exciting encounters with teams playing 25-minute half matches at the Jebel Ali Centre of Excellence every Tuesday beginning next week with kick-off times either at 19:30 or 20:30. And following the conclusion of the league where teams play each other twice, the cup competition will begin, which runs until June.

Besides the winning trophy, there is plenty to play for with individual awards for the best players throughout the league. To ensure more players can be involved, squads must consist of no more than 14.

More than 150 players of various nationalities are expected to take part this season.

“Each team generally recruits approximately 14 players to allow for the unexpected injuries, travel plans, student examinations and to make it more social,” said Lukovic.

“We’re always on our toes, encouraging ladies to join and allow teams to have strength in numbers.”

Entry for the season costs Dh200 per player and Lukovic promises it will be one not to be missed. “Seeing over 30 new players last season, we are excited and looking forward to another great season,” she said.

“The Dubai Women’s Football Association league is ready to kick off again this season with more than 150 players of various nationalities and ages.

“So it’s time to dust off your boots, grab your kit and meet us on the pitch and get involved for an exciting season ahead.”
