  • Les Ferdinand put the Red Devils to the sword in a 5-0 rout.

    Newcastle United's pursuit of the Premier League title under Kevin Keegan looked like it could come true on one October night in 1996.

    The Toon, who were vying for the coveted crown with Sir Alex Ferguson's Red Devils all season before being pipped at the wire, inflicted the biggest defeat on a United side for 12 years – a 5-0 battering at St. James' Park.

    An early goal from Darren Peacock was followed by a wonderful strike from the mecurial David Ginola before Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer got in on the act. 

    Belgian Philippe Albert then wrapped up a memorable night for the Geordies with a delicious left-footed chip over Peter Schmeichel from 25 yards to send the Toon to the top of the table.

    1990: Twenty-one Arsenal and Manchester United players were involved in a mass brawl which resulted in both clubs being fined £50,000 and a deduction of two points for Arsenal and one for United.

    2003: Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was handed a two-match touchline ban and fined £10,000 by the Football Association following a verbal attack on referee Jeff Winter. 

    2004: Formula One's contract recognition board refused to ratify Jenson Button's move from BAR to Williams. He was forced to stay with BAR. 

    2006: Great Britain's  Beth Tweddle won the gold medal in the uneven bars competition at the gymnastics World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. 

    England lost a bruising contest 15-6 to South Africa in France.

    2007: Holders England lost the Rugby World Cup final 15-6 to South Africa in Paris. 

    2009: The Football Association dismissed an appeal by Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny against a nine-month suspension for a failed drugs test. 

    2010: Wayne Rooney released a statement confirming he wanted to leave Manchester United. The England striker later reversed his decision. 

    2011: Stuart Pearce and Hope Powell were named by the Football Association as the coaches for the British men's and women's football teams at the 2012 Olympic Games. 

    Tom Queally rides Frankel to victory at Ascot.

    2012: Frankel, trained by Sir Henry Cecil and ridden by Tom Queally, won the Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot in what was the 14th – and final – victory of his unbeaten career ahead of his retirement. 

    2014: Keiron Cunningham was named the new head coach of Super League Grand Final winners St Helens, succeeding Nathan Brown.
