  • [L-R] Kone, Lahm, Sanchez.

The Bayern Munich man goes about his work on the pitch with forensic precision, and it seems as though those meticulous qualities have transcended into the German’s future planning, as insisted last month he will retire from football in 2018.

Lahm has certainly lived the dream of any young German footballer. Celebrating his 32nd birthday today, not only has he represented Bayern with distinction on 439 occasions, but he played for Germany on 111 occasions, too.

His final appearance for the national side was against Argentina in 2014 at the Maracana, as Germany won the World Cup.

His career has been nothing short of outstanding, winning the Bundesliga seven times, the DFB-Pokal six times, the Club World Cup once and a Champions League triumph as well. If he is to retire in 2018 you can be sure he will add to that list.

1982: Gonzalo Canale, rugby union full back with Clermont Auvergne and has been capped 86 times by Italy (33).

1983: Arouna Kone, Ivory Coast international and striker for Everton (32).

1986: Mark Sanchez, American football quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL (29).

1990: Georginio Wijnaldum, Dutch footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Newcastle (25).
