  • Great run: This edition will be the event’s 22nd.

Preparations have been made for another exciting edition of the Wadi Bih Run 2014 race, one of the most challenging but rewarding running events which will take place on February 7.

And there is still enough time to register for the solo category that will see you compete in some beautiful mountain scenery in Dibba, Sultanate of Oman.

The Wadi Bih Run has been held annually since 1993 and is now the oldest regular expatriate sporting event in the UAE. The profile of the run has increased rapidly with hundreds of people of all ages being put through their paces in tough conditions, and this year’s is no different with 1,200 people already confirmed.

Although team entry is closed, UAE residents who wish to participate (for Dh200) can do so by visiting www.premieronline.comBut hurry, registration is open only till today (midnight).

This year’s 72km route will be as tough as it gets, as asphalt roads and graded gravel tracks will be part of the challenges that will take you through the spectacular Hajar mountains.

The run starts and finishes in Dibba, with a high turning point (1000m altitude). If you don’t fancy that, then the 50km alternative canyon route also available.

“This is our 22nd race and it is really encouraging to see that the sport of trail running is going from strength to strength. Around 1,200 runners have already registered for this year’s event,” says John Young, founder and event organiser.

“It’s an escape from the environment of cities. The country (Oman) is remote and mountainous with superb views. It’s a spectacular place to participate in a run."

The event has sports giant Salomon as the main sponsor. Young says all runners will feel tired at the end of the race, but added that it will be a ‘real achievement’ to cross the finishing line.

He said: “It is a good work out. They will do some intense running on uphill and downhill. The people who do that (solo or team category) it is a real achievement to complete that.

“We get a lot of people who come back year after year. Some participants have done the race every year since it first started. It’s a very popular event. We see enthusiasts in their 50s running.”

The races start very early in the morning with relay teams (of five runners) taking off between 06:00 to 08:00, while solo runners will begin at 04:30.The duration of the race differs between four and eight hours depending on the speed of the runners.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams as well as first, second and third-placed winners in the men’s and women’s solo categories, including the best team name.

Also, there will be a prize for the best-dressed person so bring your best outfits if you want to be crowned the winner in this category. You will need to show your passports when crossing the border from UAE to Dibba in Oman.

No visa is required for this crossing but you will need to fill in a form – available on www.wadibih.com – before January 26.

Hotels are situated nearby for those who wish to travel the day before, while camping space is available. Alternatively, participants can travel to the Golden Dullip Hotel on the day itself, where the race will begin and end.

Race organisers have advised runners to carry some warm, windproof and rainproof clothing as well as the usual equipment and clothing for hot weather.

So if you fancy running in the beautiful mountain surroundings of Oman while meeting new people, then get going. It will be an experience you won’t forget very soon.
