  • Cruising through: Mohammed Hammadi.

UAE double Paralympic medallist Mohammed Hammadi booked himself a place in the 400m T34 final after clocking 55.55 seconds to finish second in his heat Friday at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha.

The former world champion is competing in four events this week in the Qatari capital – 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m – and is looking to fine-tune his form with an eye on the Rio 2016 Paralympics next year.

Hammadi, who won 200m silver and 100m bronze at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, qualified into today’s 400m final with the third-fastest time behind Tunisian Walid Ktila (53.61) and Finland’s Henry Manni (55.18).

Emirati Rashid Al Dhaheri missed out on a place in the 1,500m T54 final after placing sixth in his heat with a timing of 3:31.00.

With six world records already falling on day one of the World Championships on Thursday, more tumbled on Friday as Germany’s Markus Rehem registered 8.40m in the T44 long jump to take gold ahead of Dutchman Ronald Hertog (7.26m) and Russian Vadim Aleshkin (6.91m).

Cuba’s Omara Durand also smashed a world record, claiming gold in the women’s 400m T12 with a 53.05 seconds.

“I am so very proud of this gold medal and my new world record,” said Durand, who is visually impaired and was guided by Yuniol Kindelan.

Tunisian Raoua Tlili set a new world mark in the women’s F41 discus, thanks to a 29.70m throw.

“My father passed away this year so I did this for him and I dedicate my win to him,” said Tlili, a fourtime Paralympic medallist including two gold.

“I am extremely proud to do this for my country and my team-mate (Fathia Amaimia) also won silver which was amazing, we can do it again in Rio 2016 because we are confident of our level and we train very hard. We are not scared of competing at the highest level and against the best.”
