  • Packing a punch: Some of the boxers that will feature in Dubai.

As Thursday Night Fights UAE rolls out its second event, organisers are promising a night to remember when Emirates Golf Club hosts May Day Mayhem.

Following on from the inaugural event – held in Abu Dhabi in December which starred British boxer Danny Williams – Thursday Night Fights will make its Dubai debut on May 1.

As well as featuring a host of local and regional fighters, the card will be headlined by former world heavyweight champion Francois Botha.

Also featuring on the bill will be Brazilian welterweight champion and Floyd Mayweather, Sr. trained Antonio Mesquita who will commence his comeback against Dubai based French fighter Nordine Arik.

The final line-up for May Day Mayhem, which is being promoted by Lionheart Productions, will be announced on April 27.

“This is an opportunity for local fighters not only to represent their club but to represent the UAE,” said organiser Liam Mooney.

“Everyone would agree that boxing breaks down all cultural divides and it’s about time we did it in a big way in the UAE.”

PR coordinator and CEO of Dantani INC, Omar Al Raisi, believes May Day Mayhem will be a big step to help increase the popularity of boxing in the UAE.

“We are committed to helping grow boxing in the Emirates and we must put on good shows to achieve that,” he said. “The huge popularity of MMA is obvious in this country and it is time boxing caught up.”

The CEO of Emirates Golf Club, Christopher May, is delighted the iconic golf venue will be hosting May Day Mayhem and is confident of a successful event.

“We are keen to move into new areas and are very excited about hosting this fight night,” May said. “Emirates Golf Club is very famous for hosting world class golf events, but we have moved into new territory recently.

“When Liam came up with the idea, it was something we thought would be great to be involved with. I am sure this will be the start of much bigger things to come.”
