  • Big ambitions: Amir Khan is certain that he is the one fighter that could beat Floyd Mayweather.

Amir Khan remains hopeful that he will finally be able to secure a bout with Floyd Mayweather later in the year after both fighters secured victories in the early hours of Sunday morning in Las Vegas.

The Briton was left disappointed in his bid to face Mayweather and duly took out his frustration on Luis Collazo who was knocked down on three occasions and ended the bout with his face bloodied and bruised.

Khan's emhatic points victory over Collazo was somewhat in contrast to Mayweather's showing. The American was troubled in the early rounds of his contest with Argentine Marcos Maidana before gradually taking control of the fight and securing a majority decision.

Having improved his record to 46-0, talk instantly turned to who Mayweather will face in his next bout which has been scheduled for September.

Maidana felt he deserves a rematch, having seen one judge score the fight as a draw, but Khan believes he is worthy of a shot at the five-weight world champion after impressing against Collazo.

“He’s never faced anyone like me,” stated Khan in the post-fight press conference. “You saw the way I fought against Maidana and Mayweather certainly had more problems against him than me.

“It’s time he fights someone who brings something else to the table. He’s never fought anyone as quick, explosive and with as good a footwork as me.

“Me against Floyd would be one of the biggest fights ever, especially with the backing I have in Asia and the UK.”

While Khan undoubtedly has a huge fanbase there is one major issue that would need to be resolved. The timing of Ramadan means that the 27-year-old Muslim would not be able to start training until well into August.

But Khan is hopeful that his team will be able to persuade Mayweather to move the bout, which has been earmarked for September 13, until November.

“I am fasting during Ramadan so I could be going as long as 15 hours without food,” explained Khan. “For me to go into a training camp straight after that is going to be very difficult because my metabolism will be slow.

“I need at least a month after to get my body in the right shape because you put weight on as your diet isn’t the same.

“If Floyd could move it to a different date nearer the end of the year then it could happen. It’s up to my team to see if they could persuade Floyd to take the fight in November…that would be perfect.”
