  • Big hitters: Promoter and managing director at Golden Cage Promotions and Events Prince Amir Shafypour (c) is flanked by two of his fighters.

Witness an exciting night of mixed martial arts with the inaugural Global Fighting Championship (GFC) at the Dubai World Trade Centre on Thursday, May 29.

The event will feature seven super fights with the winners earning a place in the GFC Grand Prix and the main card of a four-man tournament with the victor walking away with a cash prize of Dh1million.

The tournament’s four fighters are Badr Hari, Peter Graham, Arnold Oborotov and Stefan Leko. Graham and Oborotov will match up in the first round, with Hari and Leko as the other semi-final bout.

Hari, also known as “The Golden Boy”, headlines the group with his impressive record of 114 wins (88 by KO) and 12 losses. The 29-yearold has a combination of fighting styles, using Muay Thai and kickboxing.

The GFC in Dubai will be the first of a series of fights with Turkey, Holland and Morocco also anticipated to hold the competition.

Hosting the night of entertainment is Golden Cage Promotions and Events in partnership with the Dubai Sports Council

“The GFC was founded to bring some of the world’s biggest names and heavy hitters to the ring here in Dubai,” said Amir Shafypour, promoter and managing director of Golden Cage. “The excitement of martial arts in conjunction with the glamour of Dubai will guarantee a spectacular night of entertainment."

"We are honoured to be hosting such an event in Dubai,” said Dr. Ahmed Al Sharif, secretary general of the Dubai Sports Council. “It is the first of its kind in the region and we look forward to watching the Global Fighting Championship grow into one of the biggest sports events that was launched in Dubai.”

With the continued growth and interest in martial arts in the UAE, Golden Cage attempts to merge the city’s nightlife with premier fighting entertainment.

Tickets are still available online and at retail outlets, starting as low as Dh150 for standing room and Dh300 for ringside seating.

The fights will take place in Za’abeel Halls 2 and 3 of the World Trade Centre with doors opening at 18:00 and the first bout starting at 20:00.

“We are very excited to host such an event and look forward to enjoying some high quality fights,” added Shafypour.
