Volpi, 53, is set to guide the outfit on home soil for the first time when the four-day, 671-kilometre event gets under way this morning.

The Italian possesses great experience, racing professionally for more than a decade and holding leadership positions at places such as Barloworld, Liquigas and Cannondale. He is sure this knowledge could be enough to guide countryman and key sprinter Andrea Palini to success.

“I hope I make the best for the guys,” Volpi said. “I have made a good tactic to get a good result. Our team has Andrea Palini. In the beginning of season, he won twice in the La Tropicale Amissa Bongo (in Gabon). I am happy for this team for the Dubai Tour.”

Skydive made a huge impression during the opening stage of October’s inaugural Abu Dhabi Tour, Francisco Mancebo leading a breakout which put Tunisian time trialist Rafaa Schtioui within a kilometre of the win.

The team have never managed to win a stage during the opening two Dubai tours and their Spanish veteran hopes to make history in the coming days.

“For me, I need to do the same,” said Mancebo. “We have a very good sprinter in Palini, we need to fight with other riders either in a breakaway or with them on the sprint.

“It is not easy, as the best teams are here. But we have a chance.”

General manager Mansoor Bousaib added: “We have formed a team that has mixed-experience athletes from across the world and Emirati athletes. Alberto Volpi and his knowhow will definitely help us to improve and grow as a team.”
