  • An event for all: Adults and children can take part in the Great Pulse Ride later this month.

Cycling enthusiasts in Dubai are being urged to get on their bikes for the Great Pulse Ride later this month.

Following on from the success of the inaugural Dubai Tour, the emirates’ residents can emulate the likes of Marcel Kittel and Mark Cavendish on February 28 and pedal around part of the city in aid of a worthy cause.

Taking place on the Dubai Cycling Course at the Qudra Cycle Track, the Great Pulse Ride is in its second year and according to organisers aims to “bring together the community for an energetic day geared toward promoting health and fitness.”

The ride forms part of the Dubai Pulse programme which was setup by the Dubai Sports Council (DSC) five years ago to help encourage residents to take up a more healthy lifestyle.

Staging the event on the Qudra Cycle Track ensures competitors will have the chance to do just that in a safe environment and means that cyclists of all abilities can take part.

Just like last year the Great Pulse Ride returns with three races that cater for everyone from the casual rider right up to the seasoned competitor.

Those brave, and skilled, enough will kick-off the event at 07:00 as the more experienced riders tackle a 96km route that takes in two laps of the state-of-the-art cycling course.

The second ride is for intermediate cyclists, with riders departing at 07:45 on one 48km lap of the track. While, fifteen minutes later, the children’s ride – which has a minimum age of six – will commence with participants enjoying a 10km ride.

Last year’s Great Pulse Ride saw 756 cyclists take part across the three categories, making the event the biggest community cycling event to have ever taken place in Dubai.

A further 350 riders then took part in the event’s off-road sister last November – including DSC president Khalid Al Zarooni, and his son.

The success of the 2013 events means the Qudra Cycle Track can be expected to be a busy place once again in just under two weeks’ time as riders brave the early-morning alarm call to get peddling.

If you want to be on the start line with them, you can with registration for the Great Pulse Ride open now.

The event is free for all and welcomes all ages (from six years old). Registration is simple and can be accessed online, through www.dubaipulseride.com.

And if any further incentive was needed to log on and sign up, organisers have confirmed that every individual that registers through the website will be given a medal, regardless of their finishing time in the ride.

“The emphasis of this event is again on the community and bringing together individuals and families for a day of not only fun, but fitness too. We are giving every participant that registers a medal to reward and encourage them to take their health and fitness seriously,” Dr. Ahmad Al-Sharif, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council, said.

In addition to the rides, the event will feature food and beverage facilities, bouncy castles, retail stands, and music too – making it a day that everyone can enjoy and be a part of.
