  • John Degenkolb may have had the most promising start to the season compared to the other sprinters but the German insists the focus is on only winning one stage at this week’s Dubai Tour.

The 29-year-old Trek–Segafredo rider, who clinched two wins in the Mallorca Challenge last month, will be bidding to continue his successful start to 2018 in the UAE.

“I think the most important thing is to stay calm. We’ve done two races and we have another 70 races ahead of us,” he said.

“It would be a great achievement for the team to shine. Our main focus and goal will be to win one stage.

“It all depends on the first couple of stages, and the decisive stage at the Hatta stage. In the past if you are consistent over the week, then you have a chance to win.”

In his two previous visits to Dubai, the 29-year-old has managed stage victories but now steps out alongside perhaps the most star-studded line up yet with Marcel Kittel bidding for a third successive title.

“We had a great start and we should use this start to keep the ball rolling. Everyone is super positive and optimistic, but we also have to be realistic,” he said.

“All the best sprinters are here so it will be a big fight.”
