  • History maker: Taylor Phinney wins the very first Dubai Tour.

German Marcel Kittel won the fourth stage of the Dubai Tour but it was American Taylor Phinney who was crowned the overall champion as he finished 15 seconds clear of teammate Steve Cummings.

Giant-Shimano rider Kittel has certainly had a memorable time in Dubai and has confirmed his status as one of the finest sprinters in the sport, winning three out of four stages.

However, he was unable to claim the lead in the overall standings as Phinney held off the challenge of his BMC Racing teammate Cummings, while Danish rider Lasse Norman Hansen was third.

Experienced riders Tony Martin and Fabian Cancellara came fourth and fifth respectively, but it was a tour to forget for British rider Mark Cavendish who failed to ever be in the running for a stage victory.

Kittel came sixth overall after an impressive showing throughout the four days and he will now be looking to further enhance his credentials at this year's Tour de France.

The 25-year-old claimed victory in the 121km Sport Stage, the 162km Nature Stage and was once again dominant in the 124km Old Dubai stage as he held off the challenge of Mark Renshaw.

The Australian finished in second and was closely followed by Italian Andrea Guardini.
