McLaren Silver Cup makes for thrilling showdown in Dubai

  • The fight is on: It's the final of the McLaren Silver Cup at Dubai Polo and Equestrian Club.

    The McLaren Silver Cup, as part of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup, comes to a thrilling conclusion this weekend  when the two teams remaining duel in the final.

    To be held on Friday at Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, the final will feature Ghantoot Polo against Desert Palm 2 for the silverware.

    A picnic area on the lawn will allow visitors to enjoy their own food, while watching the competition. There will be plenty of entertainment in the kids zone, with a fashion show, cheerleading performers and music by local and international DJs.

    Along with music, the setting will have a tent with delicious cuisines in an international buffet lunch, along with a range of beverages. All of that comes with a great view of the polo action.

    A shuttle bus will run from Habtoor Grand Hotel to the Polo Club every hour from 11:00 to 14:00 and back at 20:00, 21:00 and 22:00.

    The Silver Cup commenced on January 23 as 10 teams battled in the first stage with handicaps up to 18 goals. Desert Palm 2 stormed through the field unbeaten, including an 8-7 victory over Ghantoot Polo. 

    In the semi-finals, both teams edged their competition by one goal, with Desert Palm defeating Bin Drai Polo 7-6 and Ghantoot Polo beating Zedan Polo 9-8.

    Diego Cavangah scored the winner for Desert Palm 2, who will attempt to defend their 2014 title.

    For Ghantoot Polo, Alejandro Muzzio provided the clincher to get past previously flawless Zedan Polo.

    As well as taking in the exciting polo, bring your friends and family for an outdoor day of fun.

    Bin Drai Polo and Zedan Polo will play ahead of the final in the third-place match.

    The other teams that took part in the tournament included Desert Palm 1, Mahra Polo, Habtoor Polo, UAE Polo, Abu Dhabi, Edrees Polo.

    The gates, VIP and Gold Lounge will open at noon, with the international buffet running until 16:00. The sub-final will take place at 14:00, followed by the final at 16:00.

    The entrance fee for the public picnic area is Dh150 and Dh1,800 for VIP.
