  • Hobbs celebrates his victory.

Trainer John Gosden was all smiles after Godolphin’s Jack Hobbs produced a superb display to win the 150th Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

William Buick kept things simple aboard the prerace favourite, positioning him close to the pace as the William Haggas-trained Epsom third Storm The Stars cut out the running.

Jack Hobbs loomed ominously alongside from the home turn and showed thrilling acceleration once asked the question by a confident Buick to seal Classic glory in a matter of strides.

Gosden said: “He did it in good style. We’ll put him away now and go for the Prix Niel and then on to the Arc. We’ll just have two more runs this year, he needs a holiday.”

Buick was formerly stable jockey for Gosden before taking up a leading role in the Godolphin team, and he said: “For Sheikh Mohammed and all the team, it means everything to us. Everyone works hard behind the scenes.”
