  • [L-R] McCarthy, Nash, Stafford.

Injuries curtailed the career of Nash but there can be no doubt that the Canadian playmaker is one of the best point guards to have graced the NBA. The two-time MVP turns 42 today just a year after retiring from the game.

Since then he’s taken up a position as the general manager of the Canadian national team and as a player development consultant for the Golden State Warriors. He enjoyed notable success with the Phoenix Suns, starting his career there in 1996 and later returning in 2004.

It was in that season he would guide the Suns to the Western Conference Finals and earn his first MVP award, winning it again a year later.

Nash also had spells at the Dallas Mavericks and LA Lakers and the eight-time All-Star is third in NBA history with 10,335 assists, trailing only John Stockton and Jason Kidd.

1959: Mick McCarthy, is a former defender and as manager of Ireland guided them to two World Cups (57).

1978: Daniel Van Buyten, is a former Belgium centre-back, earning 84 caps in a 13-year international career (38).

1984: Trey Hardee, is a two-time decathlon World Outdoor Champion and London 2012 silver medalist (32).

1988: Matthew Stafford, is a QB for the Detroit Lions and fourth ever to throw over 5,000 yards in a season (28).
