  • Bruno retired shortly after the defeat to Tyson.

Mike Tyson’s third fight since his comeback from a prison sentence saw him rematch British heavyweight legend Frank Bruno.

And this time it was for the title. In his fourth attempt Bruno had captured the WBC title from Oliver McCall, who on his part took the belt from Lennox Lewis.

Tyson and Bruno met once before in Febuary 1989 but it was Tyson who defended his heavyweight crown, KOing Bruno in the fifth. Again, on this day in 1996, Bruno could not match Tyson’s power.

It was all over in the third when the referee stepped in to save Bruno after Tyson unleashed a 13-punch combo.

It would be the last time we’d see Bruno in the ring as he retired shortly after that defeat.

Here are some other sporting events and incidents that happened on this day:

1939: There was an NHL record 10 goals scored in one period. The New York Rangers scored seven, while the New York Americans score three. There was also a record 26 points in the third period.

1991: Brooklyn Nets coach Bill Fitch became just the fourth coach to win 800 NBA games.

2012: Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar became the first cricketer to score 100 international centuries.

2013: Kim Yu-Na of South Korea wins the women’s 2013 World Figure Skating Championships.
