  • Several Tottenham players went down with food poisoning.

All they needed to do on the final day of the 2005-2006 season was match Arsenal’s result to book fourth spot and eclipse their arch rivals in the league for the first time in eleven years, but on the eve of the match many of Spurs’ side came down with food poisoning.

A nauseating bug had seemingly been caught, and unluckily for the Whites, spread around at the team’s pre-match dinner.

And on matchday, Tottenham looked lethargic as they went down 2-1 against West Ham at Upton Park while Arsenal defeated Wigan.

Here’s some other memorable events that happend on this day:

1900: Worcestershire bowled Yorkshire out for just 99 in a County Championship match at Bradford but still went on to lose by an innings as they were bowled out for 43 and 51.

1921: The Second Division game between Stockport and Leicester attracted just 13 spectators to Old Trafford – the lowest crowd on record for a Football League match.

1990: Lancashire scored 863 runs in a county game against Surrey at The Oval, only 24 short of the Championship record set 94 years earlier.

2000: Manchester City netted four second-half goals to win promotion from Division One at Blackburn.

2001: Manchester City were relegated after losing at Ipswich.

2008: Declan Kidney was confirmed as Ireland rugby union’s new head coach.

2009: Graham Onions made a dream debut for England at Lord’s, taking three wickets in a single over and five in the innings as the West Indies were bowled out for 152.

2011: Golfer Seve Ballesteros died at the age of 54 after a lengthy battle with brain cancer.

2012: Ronnie O’Sullivan won the Snooker World Championship for a fourth time after beating Ali Carter 18-11 in the final at the Crucible in Sheffield.

2014: Swansea appointed Garry Monk as their permanent manager after a spell in caretaker charge.
