  • Can Mumbai win for a third time?

The 2015 Indian Premier League final pitted the Mumbai Indians against the Chennai Super Kings for the third time to decide the title.

After splitting the affairs in 2010 and 2013, Mumbai returned to the top with a 41-run victory at Eden Gardens, thanks to the half-century scored by captain Rohit Sharma.

Chennai won the toss and elected to bowl first, but ran into an aggressive pair in Lendl Simmons and Sharma who combined for 118 runs off 71 balls, with 14 fours and five sixes between them.

Mumbai’s total of 202 was too much for Chennai to chase down and the Indians became just the third IPL team to be crowned champions multiple times.

Here’s what else happened on this day:

1976: Muhammad Ali TKOs Richard Dunn in five rounds in Munich for the heavyweight title.

1990: The NHL franchise Edmonton Oilers beat the Boston Bruins 4-1 in Game 5 of the series to claim the Stanley Cup.

2014: Real Madrid win the 22nd Champions League with a 4-1 defeat of Atletico Madrid in Lisbon, securing a record 10th title in the competition.
