  • Tendulkar waves goodbye to international cricket.

A legendary cricket career came to an end on this day three years ago when Sachin Tendulkar played his final match at his home ground, Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

India wrapped up their Test series against the West Indies by winning the second match by an innings and 126 runs.

Tendulkar smacked 74 runs in his final innings before edging to slip on the second day, but on the final day of his 24-year career, he delivered a speech to the crowd, took a victory lap and was lifted up by his team-mates.

Tendulkar not only finished as the greatest Indian cricketer of all-time, but arguably the best to have ever played the game.

More memorable events on this day:

1957: Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics sets an NBA record with 49 rebounds in a win over Philadelphia.

1966: The Pittsburgh Pirates’ Roberto Clemente is named the NL MVP.

1983: India’s Kapil Dev takes nine wickets for 83 runs against the West Indies at Ahmedabad.

2003: Lionel Messi makes his debut for Barcelona in a friendly against Porto.
