  • Be there: The A2 Squash Championship will hold its first event this week in Dubai.

Since its launch in 2012, the A2 Squash Championship Series has been a huge hit with enthusiasts of the sport in the UAE and this weekend witnesses the first of three tournaments to be staged in 2014.

The championship series is a platform for squash players and aficionados in the UAE, where people of different nationalities and talent can come together and interact.

It was initiated to bridge the gap for a central showcase for squash players in the country. Founded by Aroop Misra, who co-runs the series along with Neil Young, the first event was staged in June 2012 and the competition this week represents the fourth edition.

The finals take place at the Fitness First Community Clubs of Meadows Town Centre (junior categories), Meadows Village (ladies matches) and Lakes Club in Dubai, which will host the men’s professional tournament.

The championship includes a host of different categories including an Open category for the pros, A category for experienced players, B for intermediate, C for beginners, a Ladies category, and then male and female under 19s, under 15s and under 13s.

Attendance is free to the general public, and organisers promise a fun-filled atmosphere for all squash fans.

“Attendees would get to watch the up and coming stars of tomorrow as well as experienced local players at the top of their game,” says tournament director Young.

Amir Malik, who is the No1 player in Abu Dhabi, and will be in action in the men’s professional event, which is a Closed Satellite PSA-affiliated tournament with a total prize money of $1000.

The tournament features a 16-player draw and includes players from the UAE, Pakistan, Wales, India and Egypt.

“The whole purpose of these closed satellites is to introduce the upcoming stars of tomorrow – those looking to get points and improve their rankings,” says Young. “And in August, we’re planning on doing our second series for the local players but we’re also doing a PSA Challenger tournament, which offers a $15,000 prize pot.”
