  • Golden chance: If you make it through the try-outs, you could be a part of Dubai Oilers in this season's Emirates Hockey League.

Ice hockey fanatics can lace up their skates and put their skills to the test for a chance to be part of the Dubai Oilers this upcoming season in the Emirates Hockey League.

The Oilers are holding free open try-outs for new players this coming weekend on Friday and Saturday morning at Dubai Ice Rink as they look to grow the sport and give everyone an opportunity to play.

“There are a lot of guys that have been training leading up to this because there has been notification of this,” said Oilers player Troy Kahler. “I know there are players from other teams trying out because everyone wants to be a part of the new wave of club hockey in the region.”

Kahler himself is an ex-professional who played in North America and will now skate this season for the Oilers – a new addition to the EHL.

The expansion team are one of two new squads the EHL will field, along with the Al Ain Bears, and are trying to create more of a club environment.

“They want to make this something that people can all put their own effort into and be part of,” said Kahler on the try-outs.

“I know a lot of the other teams in the league are like a closed recreational team. Dubai Oilers want to open it up to people and whoever would like to try out, let’s see what you’ve got.”

The try-out sessions will be an hour long, running from 9:45 to 10:45 with the first half consisting of drills and the second half holding a scrimmage.

Based on performance, the group will be cut down to 24 or 25 players, who will then join the returning players the following weekend for additional try-outs.

In the end, the Oilers will trim down the roster to 18 players and three goalies, so the competition is sure to be fierce.

While they’re open to anyone, experience is a definite plus, with junior hockey as the lowest recommended level. However, if you’re in shape and confident in your abilities, don’t hesitate to get on the ice. Just make sure you have proper equipment, because it won’t be provided.

Kahler is hoping to see new faces and expects an influx of talent.

“There are more and more players coming into the region,” said Kahler. “I know the recreational leagues are expanding. There are more quality players here. The game just keeps getting better and faster. There are more players coming into the region that are ex-pros or ex-college guys that are really helping with the game. I’m always up for some 19 or 20-year-olds pushing me as hard as I can go.”
