  • The Dane Landers, all set for the Cup competition in the DSC Etihad Monday Night 7s at Dubai Sports City.

The DSC Etihad Monday Night 7s football at the Sports Village at Dubai Sports City is all set for a thrilling conclusion to the first stage of the tournament.

Of the 23 teams doing battle, only the top six line-ups in each of the two divisions can go forward to the Cup competition and so retain a chance of lifting the title.

    – #Quiz360: WIN Real Madrid 2014/15 jersey
    – Going Out: Test your skills in Duplays’ new five-a-side football league

The sides outside that top six will have to be content with spots playing for the Plate and so, with the final week of divisional action to look forward to, the teams know it is a case of now or never.

In Division 1 four sides are locked in for the Cup – Emirates, now the only unbeaten team left out of the 23, former champion line-up The Dane Landers, the Snailmen and DMI.

In the same division it looks like a four-way battle for two places with Zagros (fifth, played seven and 14 points) and the Sweaty Cockneys (sixth, played eight and 13 points) currently in that all-important top six.

But hoping to crack into those places are Leo Pharma and another former champion side, Victory Heights FC, the team drawn from the Dubai Sports City community that fringes The Els Club and its championship golf course.

Both are three points behind the Sweaty Cockneys but Leo Pharma has a game in hand on the side directly above it so will definitely have designs on that top six.

As for Division 2, ABCDE FC holds sixth place with 12 points from eight games played and is three points clear of Sannirya (played eight, nine points), four ahead of the PGP Group (played eight, eight points) and five in front of Fyre (played seven, seven points).

At the top end of the two divisions, the leading contenders can at least relax that their spots are safe ahead of the upcoming action.

In Division 1 Emirates remain supreme (played eight, 20 points), although the side’s perfect record was ended thanks to two draws – 0-0 against The Dane Landers and 3-3 versus DMI – following six wins to begin the competition.

It is one point clear of The Dane Landers (played nine, 19 points), which supplemented its point against Emirates with successes against The Snailmen (1-0) and PIC FC (8-0), while the Snailmen side (played eight, 18 points) is third and DMI (played eight, 16 points) is fourth.

That is within sight of the office of former Real Madrid and Spain legend Michel Salgado, now the Director of Spanish Soccer Schools (SSS), the Dubai Sports City coaching programme for five to 16 year-olds that already has well over 1000 children enrolled in just its second year of operation.

SSS won the Gold award for Best Youth Development Programme at the Sports Industry Awards in Dubai last month.
