  • Bjorn Borg did not drop a set during the 1978 French Open.

In 1978 Björn Borg defeated Agrentinian Guillermo Vilas 6–1, 6–1, 6–3 in the final to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the French Open.

The Swede did not drop a set during the tournament, a feat only he, Ilie Năstase (in 1973), and Rafael Nadal (in 2008 and 2010) have accomplished at the French Open during the open era.

Other memorable events on this day:

1955: The Le Mans disaster occurred during the 24 Hours of Le Mans motor race, when a crash caused large fragments of racing car debris to fly into the crowd. Eighty-three spectators and driver Pierre Levegh perished at the scene with 120 more injured in the most catastrophic accident in motorsport history.

1982 – Larry Holmes TKOs Gerry Cooney to defend his Heavyweight boxing title infront of a 32,000 crowd at Caesar's Palace. Cooney was previously the undefeated #1 contender and the lead up to the fight had many racial overtones.

1975 – Javed Miandad's one-day international cricket debut, aged 17 yrs 364 days. He went on to become Pakistan's leading run scorer in Test cricket and is often described as the greatest batsman Pakistan has ever produced.
