  • A mixture of sports: Channon, Knight and Akabusi celebrate birthdays today.

    Mick Channon is one of Southampton’s all-time greats and is the leading goalscorer in the history of the club, with 227 goals in 607 appearances during two seperate spells at the Dell.

    Channon, who won 46 caps for England and scored 21 goals, was the leading goalscorer in the top flight back in 1974 and starred in Southampton’s 1976 FA Cup triumph over Manchester United – despite the Saints being in Division Two.

    The striker, who has become a successful horse racing trainer since his retirement and turns 67 on Saturday, left Saints in 1977 to join Manchester City before returning two years later.

    – 1977: Gavin Rae (soccer) – former Scotland, Dundee and Cardiff midfielder (38).

    – 1981: Olly Barkley (rugby union) – London Welsh’s former England, Bath and Grenoble fly-half (34).
