  • Popularity contest: Hundreds of Filipino basketball players signed up for the second season of the Tag91.1 tournament.

The highly-anticipated basketball league for the Filipino community is back.

Fourteen teams will vie for supremacy in Tag91.1’s Paliga sa Tag-Araw (Summer League) Season 2 on Friday at the Winchester School Multi-purpose Hall in Jebel Ali, Dubai.

Close to 1,500 players have registered for the event organised by Tag91.1, the first and only Filipino radio station in the UAE, but only six teams in the Junior Division (aged 13-19) and eight teams in the Senior Division (aged 20 and up) have made the cut.

“We received an overwhelming response during the two-day registration at Al Ghurair Centre and the Honda showroom on Sheikh Zayed Road,” Tag91.1 brand manager Dominique Famador told Sport360. “Some players registered as a team but we had to trim down the number of teams and make sure that everyone is an amateur player and nobody has played in the pro or commercial league.”

“Registration for the tournament is free and players are given free uniforms. Big cash prizes await the winning teams and those who were not lucky to join any of the teams, were given consolation prizes,” added Famador.

Games will be played on three consecutive Fridays starting on July 25 for the elimination round.

The semi-final is on August 8 and the championship on August 15, which will be graced by a PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) legend.

Tag91.1 popular presenter Bluebird said: “The basketball tournament is our way of thanking the Filipino community for their continued support to our radio station. We also want to engage in them in a friendly competition; promote camaraderie; and healthy living.”

“After the success of last year’s event, we decided to hold it again this year and hopefully another tournament will take place during the winter season,” added BlueBird.

Basketball-crazy Filipinos are expected to flock to the venue to give support to their friends.

Aside from basketball, there will also be a cheerleading competition and other fun activities such three-point shootout.

Many surprises such as hotel vouchers and goody bags also await the lucky spectators.
