  • Pakistan School’s Shah Faisal shone bright in their win over Sunrise in Group B.

There were wins for Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Pakistan School and The Model School on the opening day of the Under-19 UAE Exchange Abu Dhabi School League.

Simon Charles, the UAE U-19 international, grabbed three wickets and hit a quick-fire 37 not out to lead Pakistan School to a resounding eight-wicket win over Sunrise in Group B at Abu Dhabi’s Nursery Ovals.

On the adjoining pitch, however, Model were made to work hard by Shining Star International before emerging winners by six wickets with an over to spare in Group A.

Sunrise, electing to bat first, made a slow but steady start before Shah Faisal struck twice in two deliveries.

The medium pacer had Akash Nair (10) caught behind and got the next delivery through the defence of Ajmal Noorudheen to dismiss him for a duck to leave Sunrise at 26-2, and then the wickets started to fall at regular intervals.

Pakistan School lost opener Mohammed Nawab for a duck to the first legitimate delivery from Afshain Ahmed.

Well-deserved: Simon Charles receives the man of the match award.

Their joy was short lived though as Ehsan Shafiq and Charles flayed the Sunrise attack with a superb 80-run stand in 32 balls for the second wicket, which took them within a whisker of victory. Shafiq’s knock was highlighted by five hits to the fence and Charles smashed three sixes and an equal number of fours.

Model had to overcome some anxious moments before Fawaz Ahmed (17 not out) took them over the line after three needless run-outs nearly derailed them in their run chase.

In the other match, Mohammed Shibil (33) and Mohammed Naeem (24) shared a 66-run stand for the second wicket as Model rebuilt their innings after the early departure of Mohammed Mubaris (6).

Raha’s boys catch the eye of La Liga scouts

It’s been an impressive start to the UAE Schools Football Cup campaign for Abu Dhabi’s Raha International School, both collectively and individually.

Not only have the Raha Raptors’ Under-16 and Under-14 teams both enjoyed impressive starts to the competition but two players also managed to impress watching La Liga scouts.

Goalkeeper Nawwaf Husain dazzled for the U-16s in week two at Zayed Sport City. In the first week the U-16s dominated Al Dhafra even if the 1-0 scoreline doesn’t reflect that. Orlando Hernandez scored the only goal for the Raptors. Hernandez then struck again the following week, getting the only goal against GEMS International.

    Drawing attention: Miguel Alvarez.

A stunning display of goalkeeping from 15-year-old Husain was the real story of the match, though.

His performance was so impressive that La Liga scouts took him aside after the match for a one on one discussion about his play and a possible future in football.

The U14s remain undefeated after three games in the competition.

Two opening 0-0 draws were played out against Al Nahda.

The following week they played Al Ajyal International School, with 12-year-old Miguel Alvarez catching the eye of the scouts.

Alvarez also got on the scoresheet this week as the Raptors picked up a maiden win; Mansour Alnauimi also netting in a 2-0 win over Najha.
