  • Pedal power: A 20km cycling loop follows the opening swim stage.

Atlantis Resort will be the place to be on April 5 for triathletes as the Nissan Triathlon Festival makes its debut in Dubai.

Athletes will compete in various categories at the event aimed at giving the whole family a chance to get fit in a sport that is becoming increasingly popular worldwide.

The season finale festival is sponsored by Nissan and Arabian Automobiles, organised by Race Me (Tri Race Events Management) and supported by Nakheel and Dubai Sports Council.

The multiple race categories include Olympic and sprint distance triathlons, Olympic and sprint distance aquathons, airline, corporate, schools’ challenge and a 5km run. Also included are 1km and 3km fun runs for kids and team events.

The event will culminate at the Athlete’s Village with entertainment and bouncy castles for the kids.

“We want to create an annual multi-discipline event that encourages the whole family to get fit and get active,” said race director Paul Venn. “To be able to secure a sponsor like Nissan and Arabian Automobiles shows the popularity of the sport in the UAE and the desire of brands to engage with their consumers at a real grass roots level.”

Sales and marketing director at Arabian Automobiles Salah Yamout said the company is delighted to be sponsoring the event.

“We encourage and support healthy initiatives that unite the community and bring people closer together,” said Yamout. “We admire the efforts put in organising the event by Race Me, and we are keen on being involved as we hope to continue to promote events with good causes in the future.”

The event takes place on The Palm, Jumeirah with competitors swimming in the waters off the Atlantis beach before cycling a 20km loop along the crescent to the One & Only Resort.

Participants will then pass through the tunnel in both directions and back to the Aquaventure Water Park car parking area. The 5km run loop sees athletes run in the other direction along the crescent past the Sofitel hotel and back.

Registration can be done online by visiting www.premieronline.com. The closing date for registrations is Monday, March 31.

Over 400 athletes have already signed up, including 30 teams and 50 children for the fun runs.

“Events generally fill up late here in the UAE, so having more than 400 people signed up with only a few days still to register is a very good sign,” said Venn. “The event really does offer something for everyone and what matters is participation. We want people to get outdoors and incorporate physical activity into their lives, regardless of their age.”
