Spanish triathlon superstar Javier Gomez has tipped his countryman Mario Mola to win an Olympic gold medal after he tasted victory at the IPIC World Triathlon Abu Dhabi.
The 25 year old surged to an impressive win on the capital’s Corniche on Sunday to lay down an early marker as the UAE played host to the ITU World Triathlon Series season opener.

Gomez, 31, the reigning Series’ champion who is vying for a third straight title, said his compatriot was “amazing” and claims he can become an Olympic champion in Brazil next year.
“Of course he can be Olympic champion,” Gomez said of his close friend.
“I think it will be a mix of guys there (in Rio) with chances and Mario definitely is going to be one of them.

“Olympic races are different, the swim is longer. It’s probably better for the likes of the Brownlees (Alistair and Jonathan) and myself, but if you start running with Mario you know he is probably going to be the guy to beat.”
Despite finishing sixth in Abu Dhabi, Gomez pleased with his performance, having battled illness and injury in recent weeks, but was delighted for his fellow Spaniard.
“It’s amazing. We all know he’s (Mola) really fast. Obviously he was the best one here, no doubt,” said Gomez.
“I’m very happy for him because he’s a good friend. I know how hard he works and he’s a great runner. He pushed really hard. Now that I couldn’t win the race I’m glad he did.
“He is someone that I was having lunch and dinner with before the race so I’m happy for him. Obviously, for the next race we will be rivals and I will try to beat him, but it’s good for the country.”
Mola, himself, said he wants to emulate his friend and mentor.
The Majorcan finished 19th at the 2012 Olympics in London but admits he dreams of winning gold in Rio.
“For sure it’s something that I have in mind,” he said.
“It’s a positive thing with Javier having done everything he has done and having him close makes it seem in your head that things are closer.
“It makes you want to achieve what he has done. He’s been winning races for a long time. Hopefully I can follow his steps and be close to what he has done.”

After finishing second to Gomez in the WTS rankings last season, Mola will also be plotting to halt his comrade’s bid for a third straight world title and a history making fifth overall.
“I will try to fight for every race and let’s see how we are at the end of the year, at the Grand Final, and if I have mathematical options to fight for the win,” he said.
“It’s a long season and this is just the start. It gives me confidence for the next races, but this is a long season.”
