In the United Arab Emirates there is a long tradition of sailing Dhows with this heritage sport tracing its origin to when the vessels were mainly used in pearl diving, fishing and transporting goods.
But thanks to some local entities, like the Abu Dhabi Sailing and Yacht Club (ADSYC), who are set on preserving the culture, there are still plenty of opportunities today to see these fantastic boats in action, and at surprisingly great speed too.
ADSYC organises a range of Dhow races in the capital during the whole year, particularly during the cooler months and next up is this Saturday’s Zarkoh 60ft Dhow Sailing Race, a 15 nautical mile challenge leaving Saadiyat Island midafternoon and arriving to a city welcome at Abu Dhabi Breakwater around 5pm.
There are expected to be up to 80 boats on the start line so it would be quite the sight to catch that big a fleet rolling into town on the horizon, and crews giving it their all in strength and skill to cross the finish first.
A bit of an explanation for firsttime spectators – Dhow sailing is divided in three separate categories according to the length of the dhows 22ft, 43ft and 60ft.
All boats are made of wood and are designed according to the traditions and secrets of the dhow sailing families. Dhow sailing skills and traditions are passed down by parents and grandparents ensuring the current generation knows how to handle these magnificent boats in the wind and the waves.
The winners are determined by the first to cross the finish line, this means it is up to the experience and skill of the skipper (Noukhitha) and his crew to navigate the dhow as fast as possible to the finish.
