  • Loosen up: Participants are expected to do a set of exercises before paddleboarding.

If ladies want a new innovative way to exercise and stay fit, then why not consider attending Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) classes at Riva Beach Club on the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai?

There has already been a ‘great’ response to the previous classes in the on-going programme, which takes take place every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 09:00 to 10:00.

SUP has become one of the fastest growing new innovations in surfing. Inspired by ancient Hawaiians, the SUP is fun and easy to learn and can be used when the surf is flat, making it very popular in the Gulf.

The SUP is basically a large, wide surfboard that is used to ride or catch waves by standing on it and then using a paddle to move the board around.

Organised by Ignite Surf School UAE, the class ‘SUP Sisters’ consists of each female having her own board which she paddles by herself.

Aimed at beginners and intermediates for over 16-year-olds, classes are one hour long and involves group exercises which focuses on strengthening core muscles as well as a lengthy paddle to get their heart rates up.

"The response of the previous classes have been great,” said Mari de Villiers, Marketing and Communications Manager of Ignite Surf School UAE.

“We now have a couple of regulars who come every single Tuesday and Thursday. In each and every class, we have at least one person who is completely new to paddleboarding. Paddleboarding is still an innovative sport and it’s not like football or tennis.

“It’s been really encouraging as the sport is still so new here amongst the women in the UAE. They are either completely unfamiliar with it and never been on a paddleboard, or have been SUP before but have not yet been educated on the health benefits of it,” she added, stating that weekend classes will soon be held due to popular demand.

And there’s no better place than trying out SUP in a location like Dubai, which has smooth and calm waters especially as the weather is now getting warm.

Each class has a maximum of 10 females which is on a first-come first-served basis. During the class, the females will do a brief warmup, which includes a safety briefing.

They need to proceed to the water to do a cardio and do their three core exercises on the water. Classes will continue to take place until the summer.

“It’s a class that is very unique and is very easy to learn. It is sport where they are exercising but not too much at a point where people are exhausted after the class.

“It’s a perfect balance of doing exercising and socialising, and doing something different,” said de Villiers.

Females can either join for a drop-in class at Dh125 or buy a bunch of 10 sessions at Dh1,000 which is valid for three months. Each student must be able to swim and all equipment is provided at each class.
