Hamilton Aquatics return to UAE with host of medals & awards

    The Hamilton Aquatics swimmers have returned from the City of Manchester Open in the United Kingdom with a host of medals and two awards.

    The club collected the Top Team Award and Top Supporting Team Award at the meet in England, held on May 10-11, at the Manchester Aquatics Centre, which played host to the Commonwealth Games competitions in 2002.

    The swimmers also won 62 medals in total, including 22 gold. Cameron Matthews, who recently impressed at the South African Nationals, won eight gold medals in the 13-year age group, and broke the South African national age group record in the 200m medley, while Sean McNicholl captured seven gold in the 12-year age group.

    Rosie Morgan stood out in the girls’ events, winning seven medals including two gold. Lucjan Ulanowski won seven medals in the 10-11 age group, topping the podium in the 200m butterfly, breaking the Polish national age-group record in the process.

    ASCA Clinics As the local Branch of the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA), the UAE Swimming Federation has been organising clinics for coaches and PE teachers this month, and Level 1 and Level 2 clinics will be held from May 25-30.

    Both levels will be conducted by ASCA Level V coach Joel Shinofield, who is the executive director of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America and the former director of aquatics for Washington & Lee University in Virginia.

    Level 1 clinic will discuss ‘Foundations of Coaching’ while Level 2 will touch upon ‘The Stroke School’. The Level 1 clinic will cover fundamentals like: What is a swimming coach? Coaching according to needs, What does a swimming coach do? Principles of communication, Teaching skills and values, among other topics.

    Among the topics covered in Level 2 will be: Introduction and governing philosophies, relevant science to the understanding of teaching strokes.

    Each clinic costs Dh1,000 while the annual ASCA membership registration costs Dh300.
