  • Pure fun: Players can watch the races and also enjoy a tradition barbeque.

One of the most entertaining dragon boat events of the year returns this weekend, and spectators can witness the action free of charge in what promises to be the biggest and best yet.

Over 60 teams will feature in different categories this Friday and Saturday at the Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri  during the Abu Dhabi Dragon Boat Festival as corporate, university, community and international sides battle it out in the capital.

Besides watching the races at the hotel’s private north beach that will overlook the iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, there is plenty of entertainment and activities to keep you occupied during the two-day event. Spectators can enjoy the DJ entertainment, a massage kiosk, play volleyball or even have a go at kayaking.

And on Friday, there will be the traditional barbeque party available at Dh151 (food only) per adult, and Dh73 per child (under 11-years) at the Afya beach lounge of the Traders hotel, that is alongside the 1km stretch where the festival will be held.

For the first time in its six-year history, international teams will compete with sides from the UK, Iran and Qatar. An expected 1,300 competitors will take part in the two-day event.

Making waves: More than 60 teams will participate.

Jason Mackenzie, technical director of the UAE Dragon Boat Association and organiser of the Festival, said: “It’s great to see that we have over 1,000 competitors this year. With the huge number, we expect hundreds of people to watch the race,  support their teams or just want be part of an exciting atmosphere. This is my favourite event of the year because it’s the highlight of the dragon boat racing calendar. It’s spectacular. A lot of the competitors train hard and really enjoy themselves.

“The spectators will really enjoy the atmosphere and get into the spirit of showing their support as well as enjoying the entertainment.”

Since being established in China almost 2,000 years ago, the thrilling watersport has grown quickly around the world, especially here in the UAE.  And with a huge turn-out expected, MacKenzie wants more people to attend the event.

He said: “I want people to come because I want them to fall in love with the sport. I want them to see it and then say ‘you know what, even I can do that’. I want to send the message across that they can give it a try. Increasing the numbers of participants is my basic aim.

He added: “It’s important to say that anyone can do this. It’s a team-oriented yet fun event.”
