  • Hitting winners: Nick Matthew gets the victory

Day three of the ATCO PSA Dubai World Series Finals saw world number one Mohamed ElShorbagy take on England’s Nick Matthew in the stand-out game of the evening session. Both men had already qualified for the semi-finals of the competition, winning both of their previous two group matches.

Having finished ninth in the PSA rankings, Matthew had initially failed to qualify for the finals in Dubai, but a late injury to Marwan ElShorbagy, meant he took his place at the prestigious season finale. The 37-year-old Sheffield native turned back the years to win the opening game 11-6 in just seven minutes.

It’s fair to say Elshorbagy wasn’t at his usual immaculate best, having already secured his place in the last four, but nothing should be taken away from Matthew, who continued his stellar form in the tournament so far to win the second game 11-6.

Speaking to Sport360 after his victory, Matthew said: “I think it’s probably easier for Mohamed to turn off the pace, whereas at my age I need to keep playing the best I can otherwise I’ll slow down.

“I know that wasn’t him at his best but I’m sure if we meet again in the final on Saturday he’ll be giving it everything.”
