Nakheel Table Tennis Asian Cup kicks off with spectacular opening ceremony

  • With His Excellency Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council, Dawoud Al Hajiri, President of the UAE Badminton and Table Tennis Association, Tony Yue, Secretary General of the Asian Table Tennis Union and some of the world’s best table tennis players in attendance, hundreds of fans were treated to a dramatic light show celebrating the participation by national teams from 11 countries in the Asian region – the powerhouse of world table tennis.

    The final event of the evening was the announcement of the official draw which revealed the match schedule for the first day of play on Thursday 28 April.

    Every pool promises intense competition with a stellar line up of top ranked players including women’s world number one Liu Shiwen, and the Asian Cup defending champions Feng Tianwei of Singapore and Xu Xin of. The top players are seeded into Groups 1, 2, 3, while the continental representatives will contest Group D.

    The top two in Group 1, 2 and 3 will progress to the quarter finals on Friday.

    The top finisher in Group D will meet the three third place getters of Groups 1,2 and 3 to decide the remaining two players who will compete in the quarter finals.

    The competition runs from 28-30 April in Zabeel Hall 1 in the Dubai World Trade Centre, and admission is free.

    The action starts on Thursday, with games being played between 10am-12pm, 3-5pm and 6-8pm. On Friday the games commence at 10am and run through to 7pm.

    The finals will be held on Saturday, the bronze medal matches will be from 10am -11.30am, and the gold medal match from 4-6pm.
