  • Battle for supremacy: The inaugural Jiu-Jitsu President's Cup features local clubs.

At the IPIC arena in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain Jiu-Jitsu Club comfortably topped the standings, tallying 615 points for amassing 15 gold medals and eight silvers.

The battle for second place was more competitive with both Al Jazira Club and Al Dhafra Club picking up two golds and four silvers.

However, the fact that Al Jazira won four bronze, compared to one for Al Dhafra, gave them a tally of 180 points and second place overall. Al Dhafra were third with 155 points.

Al Nasr and Al Ahli were tied for the fourth place with 120 points, a result of three golds, one silver and one bronze for each.

The first-of-its-kind tournament drew 140 players representing 12 clubs across the UAE to the mat in three age and weight categories for both men and women. Categories in the championship included Senior (over-21), Aspirants (under-20) and Juniors (under-17) in both male and female categories.

Regional - Jiu-JitsuFirst place winners were awarded 30 points, while second and third places earned 20 and 10 points respectively. Five points were also awarded to those in fourth place, along with three points for those in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth place in addition to one point each for those who placed between the ninth and 16th rank.

The President’s Cup was added to the 2016-2017 season. These additions were undertaken as part of the Federation’s ongoing efforts to promote Jiu-Jitsu in the UAE and offer enthusiasts of the game an opportunity to showcase their sportsmanship. This also presents the Federation with a platform to recruit talent to represent the UAE in international competitions.

Each club registered two players in every weight via the electronic membership program by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation. The winners of the tournament also earned points in the Emirates National Rank 2016-2017 as well as the World Rank 2016-2017 as adopted by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation since 2015.

The second round of the tournament will be held in December with the final round taking place in March 2017.
