  • All together now: Hundred took part in the season opener in Ras Al Khaimah.

Taking place on Friday, November 18 with a start time of 13:00, many are expected to participate in the fun-filled family run at Abu Dhabi Beach. Open to runners of all abilities, you can lace up to take on one of three options, the 1.8km, 3.6km or the 7.2km course.

Even if you are not competing, the fun factor remains. After participants complete their distances, Festival Village awaits, creating a carnival-like atmosphere with music, entertainment and activities to keep you busy.

Sport360’s resident runner Stuart Appleby took part in the series opener in RAK and reports from the event:

Running with spectacular scenery as a companion is as good as it gets for a running obsessive like myself – and RAK’s Cove Rotana Resort was the perfect location to kick-off the series.

The stunning 600m-long private beach coastline overlooks the Arabian Gulf and with weather conditions absolutely ideal, it made for a great afternoon running environment for all. Beach-running can sometimes put pressure on the lower-leg muscles and joints due to the nature of the uneven surface, but the RAK run took place on pristine, flat and hard sand.

    Beach Run Series Abu Dhabi

    • What: Beach Run Abu Dhabi presented by ActiveLife by Daman and powered by New Balance
    • Where: Abu Dhabi Beach
    • When: Friday, November 18, start time 13:00, finish race time 17:00
    • Contact: www.beachrunseries.com

As such, it had the feel of running on a soft track – which made a huge difference given the fact there were hundreds of runners taking part of varying abilities and experience.

With so many people getting involved, the atmosphere and vibe was great right from the beginning to the finish line.

And with there being three race categories, comprising of 1.8km, 3.6km and 7.2km distances, the Beach Run Series offers a fun running experience for everyone – particularly as a non-timed event.

I ran the longest distance, comprising of eight loops of the course – with each lap being just under 1km in length.

It wasn’t as such physically demanding but running past the same landmarks as a runner adds to the mental challenge – as you end up totting up the laps in your head.

Personally, I just found it enjoyable to experience a new running setting and support this series that will go on from strength to strength.

The race opener, in association with Daman’s ActiveLife and New Balance, ran very smoothly and it’s definitely a buzz for runners to pick up a medal afterwards and then use social media to share their run achievement.

There were also plenty of people cheering on from the Festival Village beside the beach. I think whatever the level of a running event or size of race – having friends, family and passers-by watch on creates a strong energy. Food, music, entertainment and other activities were incorporated into the day too, giving runners the chance to get a well-earned bit of down time after finishing their distance.

The Beach Run Series is a first of its kind, a unique running concept and its good news that the Abu Dhabi event is not too far away!
