  • Jamie Green.

Jamie Greene has rocked the fitness world with her meteoric rise to the top of the CrossFit field.

Hailing from Dunedin in New Zealand, Greene – with a background in gymnastics and rugby – first burst on to the crossfit scene when she competed as an Individual at the 2014 Australia Regional.

She moved to Abu Dhabi nearly three years ago to work as a coach with CrossFit Yas and has continued to develop her passion for the sport in the capital.

The 24-year-old placed third overall with her team CrossFit Yas at the 2016 Reebok Crossfit games and she hopes to follow in a similar path in this year’s CrossFit games after qualifying from the CrossFit Regionals Women Individuals in Madrid recently.

As preparations continues to step up ahead of the Games in Wisconsin on August 3, Greene has split her training efficiently to prepare for one of the most gruelling fitness battles in the world.

“I’m still doing crossfit stuff like gymnastics and lifting, but there’s a lot more running and strongman stuff in my training at the moment too,” she said.

“You’ve got swimming, biking and running, but in the (CrossFit) Games you do more so that’s the reason why we need to do more cardio.”

“I’m aiming for a top 10 finish there. The first few days is normally more triathlon sort of things. The plan is to get into the top heat and hang around there for the weekend.”

Commenting on what she enjoys the most about the sport, she said: “I enjoy the variation of it, you can go in all different paths, you can work out with people or if nobody is around you can do your own thing.”

“There’s no limit on it, you can running, swimming, carry things, they can all be considered crossfit so you’ve got a lot of variety of things you can do if you get bored.”

CrossFit continues to grow in the UAE with many people getting involved to keep fit away from the busy endeavours of working life.

“When we first came here, there wasn’t many ex pats as well, even coaches here but now with that, there are already people who moved over and there’s 15-20 good athletes,” she said.

“Also, you’ve got a lot more members – locals, it’s expanded hugely. I think it’s just because the more people that join, the more it spreads.”
