Team Angel Wolf compete regularly in the UAE.

Dubai Sports World is gearing up to host a very special event next week to raise awareness about children with determination in sports, together with Team Angel Wolf.

Two customised wheelchairs, provided by Omnicom Media Group MENA (OMG), will be available to give children with disabilities in the UAE the opportunity to race, and this will be inaugurated with a fun race led by Team Angel Wolf and OMG employees at Dubai Sports World on Monday, August 7, 2017.

This initiative is part of Team Angel Wolf’s ‘Together We Can’ community programme, where they host free weekly community activities for children with determination to enjoy sports with their families and volunteers from the community.

“Since its inception, Dubai Sports World has been committed to helping families stay healthy and active, especially during the warm summer months. We are delighted to collaborate with Team Angel Wolf to launch an activity that promotes inclusion and integration of children with determination into the community, and enables them to enjoy an exciting racing activity alongside family and friends,” said Ahmed Alkhaja, Senior Vice President – Venues, DWTC.

Team Angel Wolf started as one family’s initiative, and has garnered support around the UAE over a short span of time. Nick Watson, former Royal Marine and fitness expert, and his son Rio, who has disabilities, routinely participate in racing tournaments in the UAE to raise awareness about children with disabilities in sports.

Watson and son Rio are regulars on the UAE race scene.

Alanna Turpin, Group Sustainability Manager at OMG MENA, said: “Inclusion is important to us, whether it be a child of different abilities or a member of our staff. Our partnership with Team Angel Wolf has allowed us to engage all levels of employees in the domains of corporate wellness and giving back to the community – two pillars of our corporate sustainability program.

“In 2016, Team Angel Wolf trained 57 employees to take part in the Roy Nasr Triathlon and in return, we provided them with two new running chairs. These will now allow employees, who are already committed to the cause, the opportunity to continue taking part in fitness-related challenges while including children with determination from our community in the experience.”

A team from Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) will also participate in the event to showcase its support for people with determination and celebrate greater inclusion in the community.

Team Angel Wolf’s Watson said: “We are very excited for the opportunity to launch the ‘Team Angel Wolf Together We Can community programme’ at Dubai Sports World, at such an amazing location with great facilities. We are very grateful to OMG for providing the first 2 chairs that will help the launch the programme, so we can show the community what will be available after the summer. Our goal is to have 10 chairs by the end of the year!”

To coincide with DSW’s seventh edition, the fun race is set to take place at 7am on August 7th, 2017. Participants will cover 7 km, which is 14 laps of the DSW running track. Stay cool: Play on Football Center’s quality air conditioned pitches.

It’s Just Football (IJF) and Football Center’s summer camp might well be half-way through their programme, but that’s no reason for budding footballers not to join with places still available.

At the Football Center, Al Quoz in Dubai, the camp which has been running since June 25, has already been a massive success and if kids aged between three to 16, want to find out why it’s highly-rated then there’s still time to register with sessions held until August 31.

“We have been doing the camps for a number of year and each year we try to go big and better,” said Kane Cowburn, head coach and camp director at IJF.

“This year has been very different. The numbers keeps growing and we’re lucky we have three pitches available so we’re not limited in space. “So far, the response has been fantastic this year. It’s been really good and in each session, we’ve been averaging around 90 kids each day and some days that’s higher.”

Held in air conditioned pitches, kids can look forward to a variety of activities that include skill development and fun games.

“Each day there will be exciting games, matches and tournaments all built around improving the skills and techniques of players of every ability in our fully air conditioned facility, with a fun and safe environment,” added Cowburn.

Fun for all: Kids aged three to 16 can take part in the camp, which runs for 11 weeks.

Fun for all: Kids aged three to 16 can take part in the camp, which runs for 11 weeks.

“We try to keep things fresh. We know what the kids like and those we come regularly and return each year, we bring back those activities while also trying new things that keeps them interested.

“Each week we have a different theme whether it’s Olympic or Players theme. We have just completed our Olympic theme where they competed in different event.

Obviously, it’s all football themed and that keeps things fresher because the summer camp runs for 11 weeks and if we keep doing the same thing time and time again, it does get a little bit tedious.”

Running from 09:00 to 16:00, parents can choose from three options: half a day (09:00 to 12:00 or 13:00 to 16:00) costs Dh150, while it’s Dh400 for three days or Dh650 for five days. For those who want to attend the full day, then it’s Dh250 daily, Dh650 for three days or Dh1,000 for five days.

WHAT: It’s Just Football and Football Center Summer Camp

WHERE: Football Center, Al Quoz, Dubai

WHEN: Running until Thursday, August 31

Mohammed Al Hammadi vowed to give the medals he has won at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships to deceased UAE team-mate Abdullah Hayayei’s children.

Al Hammadi’s blistering form in London continued late on Friday night as he added a fourth medal to his haul with silver in the 200m T34 final, which followed on from 800m silver on Thursday.

Tunisian Ktila Walid took home gold in the event while Australian Rheed McCracken placed third.

It was Al Hammadi’s third silver to go with his second-place finishes in the 400m and 800m, and bronze in the 100m.

“Abdullah has five children. All the UAE team made this promise to bring medals to them,” said Al Hammadi, a multiple-time Paralympic medallist.

Hayayei died in a training incident at the Newham Leisure Centre (an official World Championships training venue) days before the championships started. The throwing cage fell on him and he died at the scene. The incident is currently under investigation.
