  • Hero: Terry Fox.

The Terry Fox Run will return to Abu Dhabi on Friday January 19 2018.

The annual fundraising run is a must-attend on the sporting calendar for families, sport enthusiasts, philanthropists and UAE residents.

The run fuels charitable donations for local cancer research and commemorates the indelible mark that Terry Fox left through his fight against cancer, when he ran his famous Marathon of Hope in 1980.

The Canadian, who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 18, attempted to run across Canada raising money to fund cancer research in the hope that a cure would one day be found.

Fox ran for 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 mi) but was unable to complete the run due to his condition and lost his life at 22, however he left behind a legacy that has resonated and is cherished worldwide.

The last Run had people and schools participate by running, walking and wheeling along an 8.5KM track on the Abu Dhabi Corniche. Since 1981 the Terry Fox Run has contributed significantly towards supporting innovative cancer research and has also created a culture of social responsibility in the UAE.

“Abu Dhabi has the largest number of participants in one location around the world and I am filled with pride and gratitude that my brother’s legacy continues in countries far removed our own. With every Terry Fox Run, more funds are raised for cancer research and we come closer to eradicating a disease that touches the whole global community,” said Judith Fox, Terry’s sister.

The 8.5 Km Run will start and end at the East Plaza on the Abu Dhabi Corniche at Al Sahil Beach and will take the direction towards the Mina Zayed Port. Onsite registration and t-shirt pick up starts at 7:00 A.M. and the run commences at 9:00 A.M.

Donations are encouraged (either through t-shirt purchases or monetary donations) and the Foundation also promotes corporate participation. Companies are requested to register online or by emailing [email protected].

There is no charge to participate in the Run – pre-registration is open now to take part, click here.
