  • Happy with side’s start: Abu Dhabi Harlequins player-coach Manning.

Abu Dhabi Harlequins cannot be accused of resting on their laurels, starting a January recruitment drive despite getting off to a perfect start in 2014.

Two wins from two have seen the capital club establish a four-point lead at the top of the Gulf Top Six but their playing numbers have been depleted thanks to injuries and other factors out of their control.

Under the banner ‘Quins Want You’ the league leaders are asking new arrivals in the city, aged from four to 40, to come down and check out the club with membership fees halved.

Quins’ senior section is in particular need of recruits.

“I’m pretty sure most of the clubs in the UAE lose a few players around Christmas time,” player-coach Jeremy Manning said of the drive.

“As a club I think we’re quite light in the front row at the moment, so it’s really about getting a few people down who are new to the area, to get them down and enjoying the club environment.”

On the pitch things could not be going much better for Manning’s side after a hard-fought 21-7 win in Doha last weekend maintained their impressive opening to the year.

“It’s been a great start from the boys, they’re starting to gel as a full 22-man squad and are starting to play some really nice rugby and it’s great to see,” he added.

“We only had one lapse in concentration that led to their try but apart from that our defence was solid.”
