  • Tonkin took charge of Bahrain this year.

Bahrain blew Dragons away in the final 20 minutes in their season opener and are on the road this week at Dubai Hurricanes, and coach Tonkin is looking forward to playing at The Sevens.

“We’re really excited about going to The Sevens, it’s the first time for a lot of the boys and the nice wide pitch will hopefully suit our game,” said the Welshman.

“We’re confident and looking forward to a good game. We know they’ll come out all guns blazing after a tough loss last week. We lost narrowly here last season and hopefully we will back up a first performance from last week, but we know it will take a lot of effort.”

Tonkin is still missing a few players and said he has decided not to rush them back as he feels his team are in a good place – although they can always get better.

He added: “Training has been good this week. We’ve still been critical, we were far from perfect last week and still have a lot to work on, we’ve really been focusing on that this week and getting better.

“We did enjoy the win but we needed to get better in certain areas and the leaders in the group have been standing up and re-iterating that this week which shows the standard in the squad and hopefully it will stand us in good stead for the season.”

Canes hooker Chris Gregory, meanwhile, feels his side will only get better after a 35-13 opening day defeat to Abu Dhabi Harlequins.

“I like the management and coaching set-up is really good, and the training sessions are run really well and we’re putting a exciting game structure in place and once the boys gel it will lead to a very dominant force,” he said.
“It takes a couple of games but if we get the structures right it will be effective.”
